I am at a point in my blogging career where I’m treating my blog like a business. A very small business, but a business nonetheless. And you know what every business needs?
Blog business cards are an easy way to share your blog with others, and they are nice to have when you attend blogging conferences (I love to go through all the business cards I receive and check out all the sites when I get home). If you attend a conference and visit the sponsors (many of which might be brands you’d like to work with), it’s nice to have a card to hand them – it shows them that you’re serious about your blog and gives them an easy way to get in touch with you.
Before I made my own cards, I did some research and looked at a bunch of other bloggers’ cards online. I hired a designer and she created an awesome design. And then I paid a bunch of money to print them only to discover that the color settings on my computer were *way* brighter than I had realized…and the actual cards were much duller than I had expected. And a few months later, I changed a bunch of my social media profiles and redesigned my blog and the old cards were null and void, anyway.
The next time around, I spent a lot more time planning my cards.
Here are some tips for creating an awesome business card for your blog.
- Incorporate your brand/logo. Be sure to include your blog’s logo – or keep with the theme – when you create your card. You want your blog and your card to have the same vibe.
- Make it VERY EASY to find your blog’s name. I went with a double-sided card so I could dedicate an entire side to the name of my blog (I also had business cards in mind when we created the logo, and I asked the designer for something that could serve as a logo/blog header/business card – not only was it cheaper than having her design three separate pieces, but I also love the cohesive feeling it creates).
- Include a picture of yourself. I recommend you use the same picture across all of your social media outlets…that way, people will immediately associate *you* with all of those accounts when they meet you. Also, when you hand someone a card, it helps to have a face to put with it…if your picture is on your card, you can be guaranteed that they’ll remember what you look like! I’ve got lots of blogging business cards without pictures, and I often struggle to remember who the blogger is behind the card.
- Include your website address, email address, and a few social media accounts you are active on so people can easily find you. If you don’t regularly check the email address you have on your card, have those emails forwarded to an email address you do check regularly).
- Keep it clean and simple. You want your blog name and your contact information easy to find and easy to read.
- Don’t get too crazy. While you want your card to be unique and to stand out in a crowd, you don’t want it to be annoying. Case in point: I almost made the business cards for my Texas to You blog in a square shape. Luckily I ran that by Sarah and Elizabeth first, and they suggested I keep them a standard size. As I was organizing the cards I received at a conference last month, I realized that I was really glad they were all the same size and all fit in my card holder…if one of the cards had been huge and hadn’t fit, I probably would have left it behind! I ended up choosing vibrant colors, a heavy-weight cardstock and a matte finish for my cards, hoping those little touches would make them jump out a little bit in a sea of business cards.
- Look at your cards on several different computer monitors before you order them! The color may be different on different computers, and you want to be sure you’re getting what you expect.
- Double and triple check your cards before sending them to the printer! This probably goes without saying, but…can you imagine sending them off to be printed with a mistake? That would be an expensive lesson to learn.
You can have your cards printed at a local print shop, or you can even print them yourself to save money (just be sure to use cardstock and not regular printer paper). I’ve had mine printed online at Uprinting and have been very pleased with the finished product.
