You’ve got your blog and you’re ready to start making some money with it. You may be thinking of adding some ads, and you may be thinking of going about that by using Google AdSense. Now that you have made that decision you need to figure out how to get AdSense onto your blog. Here is a step by step break down of what to do.
Step 1: Join Google Adsense
Before we can even work on getting AdSense onto your blog you need to sign up for it. Go to the AdSense page and click the “Sign Up Now” box in the very top right corner. Once you’ve signed up you may have to wait a few days for your site to be approved. Google doesn’t want to promote their ads on spam sites, so it is a good idea to have some quality content up before applying.
Step 2: Creating Ads
Once you’ve been approved it’s time to create the ads for your site. You’ll first need to log into your Google AdSense account. Then click on the “My ads” tab at the top. Next click on “New Ad Unit.” This will take you the page where you can pick the design of your ad. The first thing you need to do is give your ad a name. The name is only seen by you, so you can choose whatever name works best for you. I recommend choosing a name that will help you remember what ad it goes with. It can be something as simple as “300×250 ad” or it could tell it’s location such as “side bar ad.” In the picture below you can see the names that I have given my ads.
Once you’ve named your ad you can start designing it. You can choose the size, the type, and you can eve customize the style. I’ll go into more detail on those choices in a later post. When you go to create your ad though make sure you have an idea of where you want to place it. You don’t want to spend time on it only to find that it doesn’t fit in the space you want. Once you’ve gotten your ad the way you want it click on “Save and get Code.”
Step 3: Putting the Ad on Your Blog
Adding an ad to the sidebar is pretty easy. Log into your WordPress. In the left side bar go down to “Appearance” and then click on “Widgets.” Then grab and drag a new “text” box over to the right side where your “Sidebar” column is. Drop the box into the location you want your ad to appear.
There are many different plugins out there that will help you put ads into your blog posts. My favorite is Ad Injection. You don’t have to use Ad Injection. There are a lot of other plugins out there that will help you, but please be careful when choosing one. Many of the ad plugins have fine print that say that you owe them a share of your ad profits in return for using their plugin.
To put the ad code into Ad injection first open it up. Then scroll down to the third grey box. Here you can choose to put your ad in different locations. Just paste the code into the location you want and then click “save all settings” in the top right corner of the grey box. There are lot of choices that you can make with Ad Injection. Too much to cover here, so look for that in an upcoming post.
That’s all it takes to get AdSense onto your blog. Your ad(s) should now be visible. The Google bots do need to comb your page and posts to find the keywords for the best ads, so if the ad is new than it may take a few hours or longer for an ad to appear. After that they will always be there. Remember that Google only allows you to display three ads per page, so don’t go crazy making a ton of ads. Also note that AdSense has a lot of strict rules. You CANNOT click on your own ads, and don’t tell other people to click on them either. Google will know if your clicks aren’t naturally generated, and they will ban you from AdSense for doing those things. In fact they will ban you if they only think you’re doing those things, and getting your account reinstated is very difficult. Don’t let that scare you away though. When you have good traffic Google AdSense can help you make a nice profit from your blog.
