A few weeks ago I talked about the different ways that bloggers make money. One of the ways I talked about was passive income, and one form of that is an ad. Ads are a great form of income because once you put the code in for them you can sit back and let them work for you. A lot of people worry about how their site will look if they put ads up, but rest assured that your readers are used to them and won’t have a problem with them. Once you have decided to add advertisements to your site you then have to decide what type. I personally feel that having collection of these types of ads is the best way to go, but do what you think is best.
Pay Per Click Ads
One of the most common, and likely most used, type of ad is the pay per click. For these type of ads you are compensated when a reader clicks on the ad that you have displayed. There are many companies that offer pay per click ads, but Google Adsense is by far the most popular. The amount of money you’ll make completely varies by ad. Most clicks will earn you less than $0.50 per click, but it is possible to make a few dollars off of a single click.
CPM Advertising Networks
CPM stands for “cost per one thousand impressions.” For these types of ads you are paid a specified amount after the advertisement on your blog has been viewed a thousand times. These types of ads are really nice because you get paid as long as people are viewing your blog. The problem with them though is that if you don’t have a lot of traffic than you’re not going to make very much money. Plus many of the networks won’t even accept you if they don’t feel you have enough traffic to begin with. Different networks pay different amounts, but you can expect to receive around $0.20 per 1000 pageviews. You can see why you need a lot of traffic to make these ads worth it.
Pay Per Action Ads
These are affiliate marketing ads, so you get paid when someone clicks on them and completes the action (usually purchasing a product). When I wrote about affiliate links a few weeks ago I told you that you could put up picture affiliate links. These are ads that your affiliate networks give you to use on your blog. You’ll likely see that the picture links don’t do as well as the text links, but putting some of these ads up could still generate you some income.
Personal Sale Ads
There is one other type of ad and that is the type where people pay you for displaying their ad. It’s not a bad idea to leave some open space on your blog for ad space. Obviously the bigger your blog is the more likely that people will pay to have their ad displayed there, but small blogs can see ad sales too. Last June I was contacted by someone wanting me to post their ad on my blog. They paid me an agreed upon amount and I agreed to display the ad on my blog for a year. My blog wasn’t even a year old at the time, and I didn’t have a very large following yet, so you can see that it does happen.
There are quite a few types of ads to choose from for your blog. Not all may be right for you at this time, but having a collection of different ones will likely give you the best return in the end.
